Modelling Bongo
Who or what is Bongo?
Just a fantasy creature we are going to model for this tutorial with the Subdivision Surface technique. By the way, we can say that Bongo is a mammalian which lives in water, as a dolphin and the walrus, and this can be enough: because it is a non-existing creature, we can begin to model following our inspiration... No much text explanation in this tut, because images are better understanding. Be aware that in Blender almost every operation can be activated by menus as by keyboard shortcuts, shown in the following text like this: (SPACEBAR > ADD > MESH > CUBE). |
Let's go!
Start adding a cube to your scene (SPACEBAR > ADD > MESH > CUBE) and,
in "Edit Mode" (the cube appears already in Edit Mode and with all the eight vertices selected), subdivide it one time (W > Subdivide). Select the vertices of a side (let's say the "front side") with the B key and extrude them (E > region), scaling (S) as shown in the images. Do the same with the bottom line of vertices. |
This is the basic shape of the head of Bongo with subsurface = 2 (you could easily reach a value of 3,
but usually 2 is quite enough.
Values beyond 3, in this case, are useless). Now select the back vertices: extrude and scale them to get the overall shape of the body. |
Select and separate (P) the head from the body. Go out of "Edit Mode" (TAB) and select the just
separated head. Enter again in "Edit Mode".
Extruding the back vertices of the head, create new vertices for the wrinkles of the neck.
Go out of "Edit Mode", select both the meshes and join them (SHIFT+rightclick - CTRL+J);
then, one more time in "Edit Mode", select, scale and move (G) the vertices of the wrinkles to have
a less regular shape.
Do the same with the end of the neck.
Now go in top view (NUMPAD7) and select half of the mesh's vertices. Erase them (X > Vertices). Go back to the head and select the four vertices of a face where you want the eye of Bongo to appear; extrude the face, scaling inside. |
